A jury in Carlsruhe acquitted today Professor Kraft, who was tried for insulting the flag of the German Republic.
The Professor, a notorious anti-Semitic agitator, stated in a public address that the Republican flag was a “Jewish banner.” In the court room the defendant explained that it was not his intention to cast reflection on the colors, but rather to deride the Jews. The jury accepted the explanation.
An exhibition of paintings and water colors by Elias Newman was opened in Washington at the Yorke Gallery. Thirty-six items are included in the exhibition, which has attracted considerable attention in the press and local art circles. Most of the subjects included in this exhibition depict scenes in Palestine, where Mr. Newman lived for two years. There are also a number of American landscapes and views, including some in Georgia and Virginia.
Mr. Newman’s current Washington exhibit is his fourth “one-man” exhibition this season, having been preceded by exhibitions in New York. Baltimore and Atlanta. In Baltimore the Museum of Art, at which his exhibition was held, and in Atlanta the Atlanta Museum, acquired paintings by Mr. Newman.
