Characterizing religious persecution in Russia as “absurd, unthinkable and unpardonable,” and comparing the immigration legislation now pending in Congress with the old Czaristic days, United States Senator Royal S. Copeland of New York, speaking at the silver jubilee dinner of the Independent Order of Brith Sholom, made it clear that the governments of the world must give serious consideration to the former and the American people must not permit the latter to be enacted into law.
Though offering no definite solution, Senator Copeland said a peaceful way must be found to put an end to antireligious practices now in vogue in Russia. “Sometimes when one thinks of the intolerance abroad in the land and the efforts of those who would enact such laws as registration bills, we get a little blue about America. The entire American people should oppose such measures.”
The dinner was attended by 500 members of the Brith Sholom, representing lodges in various parts of the country. Judge William M. Lewis, grand master, presided. After reviewing the work of the order during a quarter of a century, he told of the forthcoming Allied Campaign, calling upon Brith Sholom lodges throughout the country to respond generously to this latest appeal.
