Considerable hope for a proper regulation of the Jewish communities law is seen by Jewish leaders here today in the appointment of Professor Andrei as under-secretary of worship. Professor Andrei is on the faculty of Jassy University and vice-president of the chamber of deputies. He is known as an outspoken opponent of Professor Alexander Cuza, the anti-Semitic leader. M. Costacescu will continue as minister of worship.

The present Jewish communities law has been one of the principal difficulties of the Maniu government in its relations with the Jews. The law was passed without consulting Jewish leaders or spokesmen and a promise was made that before the statutes governing it would become operative a congress of Jewish communities would be consulted. This promise had been reversed and a conference of important Jewish organizations and Jewish leaders promised instead. The new political developments, however, have again changed the situation and the appointment of Professor Andrei to the ministry of worship is taken as an indication that the government is prepared to keep its earlier promises.
