A violent anti-Semitic campaign was launched here today by the newspaper Makedonia, party organ of former premler Eleutherios Venizelos. Makedonia is notorious in Greece for the bitterness of its anti-Semitism and is held responsible for previous anti-Jewish outbreaks, particularly the anti-Jewish riots in June, 1931, which resulted in the firing by Greek hooligans of the Fauborg Campbell in which most of the Salonica Jews lived.
Under the pretext of exposing the expropriation of property in the Campbell quarter, Makedonia today began what was termed “sensational disclosures,” with the avowed object of inciting Christians against the “Jews and the government.”
Newsboys shouting the sensational nature of the articles in Makedonia created a great stir in the streets of Salonica and sold a large number of papers.
The population of the city was greatly affected by scare headlines, such as “Unheard of Scandals. By Means of a Law, the Greek Government Presents Salonica to the Jews. Israelite Community Tricks Greek State. What Jewish Votes Costs the State.”
Makedonia declares that the government headed by Premier Panayoti Tsaldaris, in power since March, 1931, ceded 185,000 square metres of land in the Campbell quarter to the Jews in order to be agreeable to the Grand Rabbi of Salonica, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Koretz, and to obtain Jewish votes for the government in the election of last year.
