Richard E. Gutstadt, national director of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, today revealed information indicating that anti-Semitism throughout the United States is regimented and has a hold among hundreds of thousands of bigots.
“There are thirty-two anti-Semitic organizations in the country,” Gutstadt told a correspondent for the Jewish Daily Bulletin. “One of them is run by a Baptist preacher, the Rev. Gerald Winrod of Wichita, Kansas, who tells his 50,000 followers that the long-exploded “Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion” is gospel truth and the Jews seek to control the world.”
He charged Winrod with being prepared (for a slight charge) to send anyone anti-Semitic literature including the treatise, “International Jew,” which was once published and is now disavowed by Henry Ford.
“Winrod,” said Gutstadt, “is America’s prize example of anti-Christian teachings. He is attempting to crucify the Jew on a cross of lies.”
LISTS HATE GROUPS
Gutstadt called attention to the Crusader White Shirts, operated by George W. Christians of Chattanooga, Tenn., as “America’s newest racket.”
“The White Shirts,” he said, “claim two million members and have about 50,000.” Gutstadt set the number of Silver Shirts at about 400,000 on the strength of creditable reports.
“The Green Mountain Boys, headed by a wild-eyed hill billy named Everett Saunders, with headquarters in Virginia; the League for Industrial Defense, centered in Boston and controlled by Ervin L. Potter; the American Vigilance Intelligence Federation, which handles twenty-one types of anti-Semitic literature and is led by Harry Augustus Jung, are among the outstanding anti-Semitic organizations in the country,” Gutstadt declared.
He further listed as anti-Semitic the following:
“The ‘Paul Reveres’ of Chicago under the leadership of Col. Sdwin Marshall Hadley, author of ‘Sinister Shadows’ and ‘TNT.’
“The Progressive Fascisti League of Chicago, whose platform demands, ‘Purge America of the Jew!'”
UPHOLDS EVIDENCE
Gutstadt reviewed evidence given during Congressional hearings tending to show that Nazis have set themselves up in most large American cities, and said that Seattle is recognized as one of the centers of Nazi activity on the Pacific Coast.
The B’nai B’rith spokesman urged Jewish parents not to insist upon sending their children into professions when the children themselves preferred other fields of occupation.
Gutstadt was the first man to join the B’nai B’rith in San Francisco, after the earthquake there. He has been occupied with B’nai B’rith work for the last twenty-eight years.
