Much of the poultry that goes under the name of kosher in New York City is, in reality, not kosher, it was disclosed yesterday at the first hearing conducted by Judge Otto Rosalsky, newly appointed mediator of the poultry market difficulties, in his chambers in the Criminal Courts Building.

Arthur Simon, Health Department confidential investigator in charge of Kashruth and adviser to Judge Rosalsky, said, an investigation of New York City poultry markets revealed that in many markets fowl was being slaughtered so rapidly, under the pressure of market owners, that it was not kosher.

Spokesmen for Shochtim Union Local 440, the organization of slaughterers, agreed with Simon’s assertion.

During a heated three-cornered debate involving the attorneys for the slaughterers, the wholesalers and the retailers, J. Sidney Bernstein, counsel to the New York Live Poultry Slaughterhouse Association, organization of wholesalers, declared:

“We object to the promptings of rabbis in the poultry industry.
