Chancellor von Starhemberg of Austria declared today that the government will not pursue an aggressive policy toward the Jews in Austria but will content itself with “defensive” measures against them.
Replying to questions put to him by the London Daily Express correspondent on the Jewish question, von Starhemberg gave the following reply, according to the Express.
“Austrian Jews occupy a number of posts in the professions and services out of all proportion to their percentage of the population.
“We have had such an influx of refugees that the late Chancellor Dollfuss was nicknamed ‘the Pontius Pilate of Austrian Judea.’
“Our measures against the Jews are purely defensive. They are not aggressive. There will be no persecution and no pogrom in Austria.”
