Jews in the “liberated” Ukraine are being put to forced labor and must wear white armlets bearing the Star of David, it is reported in the Voelkischer Beobachter, Hitler’s leading organ, which reached Lisbon today.
Other reports coming from Germany reveal that 3,000 Jews have been arrested in Zagreb, capital of the Nazi puppet state of Croatia. They were all interned in special camps. Many Jews are also reported arrested in Belgrade and Sarajevo for allegedly listening to London broadcasts and painting “V” signs on walls and sidewalks.
Jews, Serbs and Gypsies are forbidden to enter hotels and restaurants all over Croatia, the German press reported. Similarly they are not permitted to ride in street cars.
Private reports reaching Lisbon state that a number of Jews who were working in forced labor battalions at Sarajevo were beaten to death by the Nazi guards for allegedly working too slow.
The Reich’s Official Gazette today carries a decree which provides that Jews in German and Nazi-held territories, irrespective of their citizenship, are not to receive any indemnity in case their property is bombed. On the other hand they are to pay indemnity to any Aryan should he suffer loss or damage while on Jewish premises.
