The people of France were advised today over all radio stations in the unoccupied zone that their opposition to the anti-Jewish measures of the Laval government will bring no results.
Indicating that the Vichy authorities are determined to continue the deportation of Jews, a broadcast by an official of the Commissariats for Jewish Affairs stated that “one of the first conditions for the emancipation of the French people is that they should treat the Jews as dangerous foreigners.”
Information reaching here from Paris today states that several thousand Rumanian Jews have been arrested there during the last few days for deportation to Transnistria, the Rumanian-held section of the Nazi-occupied Ukraine. At the same time, Hungarian Jews were arrested for deportation to unknown destinations. In rounding up alien Jews for deportation to Eastern Europe, the Nazi authorities in Paris have heretofore abstained from arresting Jews who are nationals of countries allied with the Axis powers. The present arrests of Rumanian and Hungarian Jews were carried out with the consent of the Bucharest and Budapest governments, the Gestapo in Paris claims.
The Berlin radio today announced that any Jew in Rumania over the age of 15, whether man or woman, who returns illegally from the camps in Transnistria to the section of Rumania from where he was deported, will be executed, according to an order issued yesterday by the Rumanian Government. Those aiding Jews to return will be punished by 5 to 25 years at hard labor.
