The documents in possession of the State Department relating to the collaborationist activities of the ex-Mufti with the Nazis will not be published at the present time regardless of the Mufti’s political activities, it was said today by Under-Secretary of State Robert Lovett at a press conference.
The Department’s policy regarding publication in general of seized German documents, according to Lovett, is to release them when their translation is completed and when they have been cross-checked with the British. Asked whether in view of the small staff working on the documents, they might not be published for from five to ten years, Lovett said that this estimate was way off. Certain documents relating to the fairly recent past ought to be ready within a matter of months and not of years, he said, adding that he did not know whether any of these relate to the ex-Mufti.
