A former Gestapo official, George Albert Dengler, known as the "hangman of Darmstadt," was sentenced to six years in jail during the week-end and had his civil rights taken away from him for three years. The 46-year-old Dengler, who in 1943 arrested 12 Jews, told the court before sentence was pronounced that he was willing to accept his punishment because he recognized his crime.
