Assurances that the Turkish authorities will take all possible measures to repress an outbreak of anti-Jewish activity in this country were given today by the military commanders enforcing the current state of siege to a Jewish delegation. The meeting followed anti-Jewish incidents in Istanbul and elsewhere which have been occurring with some regularity ever since the Sept. 6 anti-Greek riots during which many Jews were attacked.
The delegation, headed by Grand Rabbi Raphael Saban, stressed the feeling of insecurity held by Turkish Jews because of the recurrent incidents. It reported some of these incidents including the painting of swastikas on the homes of Jews in Yenikoy, a suburb of Istanbul. The delegation asked the authorities to confiscate four anti-Jewish publications which recently appeared on the stands here. One of them is the “Secret State and Program of Conspiracy” by Cevat Rifat Atilhan, a notorious anti-Semte. The authorities pledged to halt distribution of these books.
At Ankara, Henry Soriano, Jewish member of Parliament, also discussed the situation with Government authorities and urged strong measures to prevent further anti-Jewish incidents.
