The British Government believes that the United Nations Emergency Force should be maintained in being at least until its present mission–keeping the peace along Israel’s Gaza Strip frontier–has been completed. Commander Alan Noble, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, told Commons today.

The government spokesman praised UNEF for having been of “great value” in stabilizing the situation in the Middle East and for having increased the United Nations authority in the region. He reiterated, in response to questioning from the floor, the government’s hope that “something of a permanent nature” would develop out of UNEF.
