Andre Gromyko, Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union, today attacked Israel before the emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly for sitting “mysteriously silent” in the face of reports that it would invade Jordan.
“There are mysterious hints,” Mr. Gromyko told the Assembly in the course of a long denunciation of American-Anglo “intrusions” in Lebanon and Jordan. “The hints are that the British are prevented from leaving Jordan because of threats that Israel would attack Jordan and war would begin. All this time the delegates of Israel are here. They are right here, mysteriously silent. The Israel delegation does not either deny or confirm, it is merely sitting pretty.
“If Israel is not supported, there cannot be any such attack. And Israel should make a statement, put an end to such intimidation. If this is not done, then it shows that the comedy is being played out to the end, a comedy in which the roles have been assigned in advance.”
