The Israel Navy command is being flooded with applications from eager would-be submariners. The announcement yesterday that Israel would acquire two undersea craft from Britain brought applications today from every quarter.

It was learned that physical and mental requirements for the new submarine service will be quite stiff. One source said that the members of the crew will have to undergo tests similar to those taken by candidates for jet pilot training. In addition, successful candidates will be required to sign up for a five-year hitch.

The name of the commander of Israel’s first submarine has been withheld, but a few facts about him have become known. It is known that he lives on a kibbutz and is a veteran of the Palmach, the striking force of the Haganah during the Mandatory regime.
