A plan for development of the City of Elath into a metropolis with a population of 60, 000 permanent residents, flanked by two major tourist resort areas, was submitted to the Ministry of the Interior’s Town Planning Committee, today.
The plan is based on blueprints drawn by one of the foremost town planners in the world, Prof. Luigi Piccinato, of Italy. It envisages Elath proper as a city filling three functions: 1. As Israel’s enlarged port on the Gulf of Akaba; 2. As the administrative seat for the Southern Negev area; and 3. As a trade and industrial center.
The tourist areas will occupy the two main beaches, to the southwest and to the northeast of the city proper. One of these areas will be set aside for motels, the other mainly for hotels. Canals are to be built, leading circulating seawater to artificial lagoons that will serve as swimming pools in the tourist areas.
