The Middle East plank of the Democratic platform prompted favorable comment today in circles friendly to Israel. Jewish spokesmen also voiced satisfaction over the constructive approach evidenced in the plank.
A Zionist spokesman said the Democratic Platform left no doubt of that party’s position and called the Middle East plank “a blueprint for peace. ” He predicted that the Republicans may take a similar stand in Chicago.
Against the background of mounting distorted Arab propaganda on the refugee question it was encouraging that the Democratic platform adhered to its 1956 position and frankly calls for resettlement of the Arab refugees in countries where there is room and opportunity for them, it was pointed out.
The position of the platform on the imbalance of arms in the Middle East created by Soviet shipments to that area was considered somewhat more explicit in 1956 than it is this year. The spirit, however, is the same. The wording on discrimination, on the other hand, is stronger in the new platform, it was stressed.
