An amendment to the pending legislation in Parliament, providing Austrian indemnification for persons who suffered from Nazi persecutions in this country, was introduced here by the Cabinet today. It liberalizes the proposed compensation law so that German Jews who lived in Austria will also be eligible for payments.
While the amendment speaks merely of German nationals who had lived in Austria under the Nazi regime, the fact is that most of the persons in that category were Jews. Parliament’s subcommittee studying the proposed legislation is now scheduled to meet March 21 to decide finally on the agreement between Austria and West Germany, under which the Bonn Government will make a 50 percent contribution to Austria’s restitution program.
