Mendel Stein Sapir of Chile was elected president of the 20th District of B’nai B’rith at its fifth annual Latin American convention here. Other officers, from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, were also named.

The convention approved formation of a 23rd B’nai B’rith District, made up of lodges in Caribbean countries, which will be installed shortly in Caracas, Venezuela. Rabbi Jay Kaufman of Washington, executive vice-president of B’nai B’rith, was a participant in the convention proceedings.

A highlight of the sessions was the unprecedented visit to the convention of two Catholic Cardinals, Dom Agneli Cardinal Rossi, Archbishop of Sao Paulo, and Leo Joseph Cardinal Suenens, Archbishop of Malines-Brussels, who greeted the delegates. Owing to garbled cables, JTA incorrectly reported that a convention delegation had been received by the two prelates.
