A solution of the Middle East conflict will have to be sought in the future outside the framework of United Nations institutions. Israeli circles said today in the wake of last night’s vote in the General Assembly. Israelis were clearly embittered by the vote which they described as a distortion of the Security Council’s Resolution 242. They seemed to pin their hopes for breaking the deadlock on American initiatives for an interim agreement between Israel and Egypt to reopen the Suez Canal.
Sources here said the government was still waiting for clarification from the US on the terms of such an agreement. What Israel wants is an American undertaking not to insist that Israel permit Egyptian forces to cross the canal in the wake of an Israeli pullback from the east bank. The Israelis agree, however, that the logic of the situation calls for a continued search for negotiations, unless one of the sides-Egypt is determined to renew hostilities. The question, they said, is whether or not Egypt realizes this.
