The Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Near East has warned that “the present quiet interlude in the Middle East is deceptive and urged the US to “circumvent any gathering storm. Rep. Lee Hamilton (D. Ind.) declared in a floor speech yesterday that the Nixon administration “must redouble its efforts” in three areas: To bring Egypt and Israel “to the table so they can negotiate”; to talk with the Soviet Union about peace and arms limitations in the Middle East; and to “facilitate” Dr. Gunnar Jarring’s mission “pursuant” to UN Resolution 242.
