Greek postal authorities have expressed their “deep regret” over the letter bomb which exploded last week in the hands of a Chilean bomb expert. The bomb, which blinded and wounded the official, had been mailed from Athens and addressed to Honorary Israeli Consul in Santiago, Samuel Goren. In an official statement postal authorities said it was “extremely difficult” to trace such parcels, since more than one million letters pass through Greek post offices each day.
Following the incident, the general director of the Greek Postal Authority, G. Kourembanas, received a visit from the Lebanese ambassador here Kourembanas reportedly warned him that he also could receive such bombs, a statement which the press interprets as implying Lebanese responsibility.
The head of the Israeli diplomatic mission here has issued no official statement nor taken any steps in the matter. Security police say the letter bomb was mailed from the King George Hotel mail box in Athens. The envelope was signed “Grumbman.”
