Israel showered warm official praise on Ottawa today for the Canadian government’s decision to postpone the United Nations-sponsored conference on crime if the PLO, is invited. The parley was to have opened in Toronto in September. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Canada had, by its decision, dissociated itself from the practice of exploiting international conferences of a professional nature for political purposes.

“Israel appreciates the fact that the government of Canada made a public declaration of its adherence to the universality of the UN and of its opposition to any attempt to adversely affect the participation in the UN General Assembly of Israel or any other country,” the Foreign Ministry said. “The government of Israel joins in the hope of the government of Canada that the negotiations now taking place between Israel and Egypt through the good offices of the U.S. will be successfully concluded and will promote peace in the region.”
