The Israeli government came under fire from Orthodox rabbis today for its lack of action in removing some 40 Jewish children from Iran from missionary schools in Israel which they are presently attending. The Israeli Education Ministry acknowledged that the youngsters were attending missionary schools but said it was investigating the situation.

The Union of Orthodox Rabbis (UOR) said the situation is “enough to make any Jew who is proud of his or her heritage, religion and culture, sick to the core. The Israeli Parliament and the religious community (in Israel) seem to have their heads firmly planted in the Negev sands.” The UOR called upon Premier Menachem Begin of Israel and the religious parties in the government “to take instant action to right this wrong. This isn’t a mistake; it is a tragedy.”
