A new West German book blames indifference among responsible Americans to the fate of the Jews as the reason Auschwitz was not bombed by the Allies during World War II.
The book, “Why Auschwitz Was Not Shelled?,” is by Heiner Lichtenstein, a 48-year-old news editor of a Cologne radio station. Lichtenstein, who has followed dozens of Nazi trials in Germany for the past 20 years, is also the author of “Maidanek — An Account of a Trial.” Lichtenstein stresses that the Germans are alone guilty of the Holocaust. But he documents how the Allies missed a chance to save thousands of inmates in the infamous death camp.
