The White House urged Swiss and Jewish negotiators to resume talks aimed at reaching a settlement of Holocaust-era claims. White House spokesman Mike McCurry, responding to a letter sent from Swiss President Flavio Cotti to President Clinton urging Clinton to block boycotts against Swiss banks, said the sanctions “risk heightening a confrontational atmosphere in delaying resolution of the overall dispute.” Cotti’s letter was the strongest protest to date by the Swiss government since U.S. public finance officials gave a green light after settlement talks broke down.
