A Palestinian court sentenced a Hamas militant who escaped a botched Israeli attempt to capture him last week to 12 years in jail for setting up an illegal organization, recruiting members and providing them with arms, and public disorder. Observers suggested the speedy trial of Mahmoud Abu Hanoud was intended to avoid an extradition request by Israel, which holds him responsible for two 1997 suicide attacks in Jerusalem.
