Israel’s police chief urged settlers slated for evacuation not to resort to violence. “The soldiers and police are carrying out their mission as empowered by law. It is important to remember that after the disengagement a new day will dawn, and that we as police will continue to protect and serve the evacuated residents anywhere else in the country,” the inspector general, Moshe Karadi, said Thursday during a meeting with President Moshe Katsav. Israel’s police force has drafted 14,000 new personnel ahead of the August withdrawals from Gaza and the northern West Bank.
