At least one liberal Jewish organization is expected to oppose Judge John Roberts, President Bush’s nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. Bush on Tuesday nominated Roberts, 50, a judge on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, to be a Supreme Court associate justice. Roberts was appointed to the circuit court in 2003. Some Jewish groups said they will research his record before deciding whether to support or oppose his confirmation. The National Council of Jewish Women opposed Roberts for the appeals court in 2003. Phyllis Snyder, NCJW president, said the group likely will oppose him again, based in part on his opposition to abortion rights.
