Jewish Funds for Justice recognized four Jewish social activists with its first-ever Cornerstone Awards.At an event in New York City Thursday, JFSJ handed out the awards to Andrew Friedman, co-founder and co-director of a grassroots organization serving low-income New Yorkers; Julie Iny, associate director of a youth leadership training organization in Oakland, Calif.; Elana Karopkin, founding principal of a public high school providing mentorship opportunities to young people in New York; and David Lubell, founder and director of an immigrants’ rights group in Tennessee.The awards, presented to individuals whose social action work forms the “cornerstone” of a more just society, were given in honor of four Jewish activists: Sally Kohn, Lawrence Levine, Ruth Polacheck Usher, and Valerie White.
