For the second time this year, a golf club in Australia founded by Jews was victimized by an anti-Semitic attack.
A giant swastika and the letters “KKK” were scorched onto the fourth green at Cranbourne Golf Club near Melbourne last week, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
The club’s general manager, Sean Constable, said the incident, which happened as most Jews were celebrating Rosh Hashanah on Sept.12, “upset many of our members.”
An anti-Semitic attack earlier this year had ruined part of the 13th green, Constable said, and in the 1990s a giant swastika was emblazoned onto a green.
B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Michael Lipshutz said it is “worrisome” that the level of anti-Semitism in Australia is rising.
Cranbourne was founded by Jews in 1954 at a time when they were excluded from other clubs because of their religion.
