The Democratic presidential candidates may have pledged to not campaign in Florida, but no one said anything about sending their congresswoman: Nita Lowey, whose New York district includes the Clintons’ Westchester home, was down in South Florida over the weekend to stump for Hillary. She was joined by a fellow Democratic congresswoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, in a visit to the Pembroke Pines retirement community Century Village. It was an “older, Jewish” crowd, according to the account from the Miami Herald’s political blog:
“At this very difficult time in our history we have to be sure –- and I know it’s become a cliché, but I’m going to say it anyway –- but we have to be sure we have a president who steps into that Oval Office and knows what they are doing,” Lowey said over the buzz of the room’s ceiling fans. “There’s no question that Hillary has the wisdom, the judgment, the passion and the experience to be a great president.”
But several dozen attendees didn’t need to be convinced; they had already cast their absentee or early voting ballots. And Wasserman Schultz praised the community’s long history of political involvement.
“There is no condominium in the country that has a better reputation for turning out the vote than we have in the Century Villages throughout South Florida,” she said. “I know how strongly you feel about the issues that are important to this country.”
