Report: Shin Bet pressures Palestinian patients

Israel’s security service pressures Palestinians seeking to leave Gaza for medical care to work as informers, a new report says.

Physicians for Human Rights-Israel alleges in a report released early Monday that the Shin Bet interrogated some of the Palestinian patients with referrals for medical treatment outside of Gaza as part of their decision-making process in granting an exit permit.

The security authorities attempted to convince the patients to inform in return for an exit permit, a violation of The Fourth Geneva Convention and the United Nations Convention Against Torture, according to a report titled “Holding Health to Ransom.”

The report includes details of testimony from 11 Gazan patients of 32 received by the organization dating to June 2007 who say they were prevented from leaving Gaza after refusing to cooperate with Shin Bet interrogators at the Erez Crossing.
