(JTA) — A top Israeli official met with his Russian counterparts to discuss arms sales to Iran.
Amos Gilad, the Israeli Defense Ministry’s top diplomat, made the case in a visit to Moscow this week against the sale of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Iran. Such missiles would severely preclude an Israeli strike on Iran. Russia has previously said it will not sell the missiles to Iran.
Gilad told Russian news media that he expected Israel and Russia to take each other’s interests into account in defense deals, an apparent allusion to Israel’s draw-back from military support for Georgia, where a small war with Russia flared this summer.
Gilad also discussed the sale of spy-drones to Russia, in what media said would be the first such sale of Israeli military hardware to Russia.
