WASHINGTON (JTA) — Nearly two dozen Jewish members of Congress celebrated the swearing-in of the 111th U.S. Congress.

Tuesday afternoon’s National Jewish Democratic Council reception, a Capitol Hill event that also drew some non-Jewish members of Congress, featured the presentation of shofars to the new Jewish members of the House of Representatives, including Reps. Alan Grayson of Florida and Jared Polis of Colorado.

A shofar also was ready for Al Franken, who on Monday was declared the victor in the U.S. Senate race in Minnesota but was not in Washington to be sworn in Tuesday. Incumbent Republican Norm Coleman, who also is Jewish, said Tuesday that he would challenge the result in court.
