JERUSALEM (JTA) — A high-ranking Hezbollah official said the organization has been providing Palestinians in Gaza with "every type of support" that is possible, the Financial Times reported.
Sheik Naim Qassem, the deputy secretary-general of Hezbollah, confirmed that the movement has been supporting Hamas in Gaza in an interview with the London-based newspaper published Tuesday.
“We have always said that we supported the resistance in Palestine, but we have not mentioned how or given details of such support,” Qassem told the newspaper during an interview at a secret location in southern Beirut. “But Egypt has now revealed that we have given military support to Palestine. We have done so for a while, but we have not talked about it.”
Qassem refused to confirm whether Hezbollah was supplying arms or training, but left no doubt that Hezbollah was now acting regionally to oppose the Jewish state.
Israel fought Hezbollah in the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
Hezbollah reportedly has a strong chance of winning parliamentary elections June 7 in Lebanon.
