The American Jewish Committee is praising President Obama for his backing of a national fuel efficiency standard of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, four years earlier than the date set by Congress in 2007.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) praised President Obama for his initiative to set a national fuel efficiency standard of 35.5 miles per gallon for vehicles by 2016.
“Creative thinking and bold action will contribute to breaking America’s dangerous addiction to oil imported from hostile nations,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris.
“Establishing for the first time a national standard for emissions limits for all vehicles is the fresh approach needed to help reduce the oil dependency and contribute to a cleaner environment.”
AJC has vigorously advocated over the past three decades for comprehensive energy security policies, and welcomed Congressional action in 2007, raising the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE standards) to 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2020. The CAFE standard currently is 27.5 mpg for cars and 24 mpg for light trucks.
