WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Republican Jewish Coalition is urging its members to oppose Democratic-sponsored legislation reforming health care.
In an action alert, the group encourages its activists to contact their members of Congress and oppose what it calls "Obamacare," and provides sample letters.
While the RJC has taken a position against health care reform, several other Jewish groups — including the Reform movement, Jewish Council for Public Affairs, United Jewish Communities and B’nai B’rith International — have been vocal backers of health reform legislation.
The RJC specifically criticizes likely provisions in the legislation that would mandate every American purchase health insurance, tax employers if they do not provide health coverage, put insurance companies under federal regulation, and place new requirements and establish mandatory benefits for policies offered by private insurers.
The action alert argues that the consequences of those provisions "will include massive taxes, massive new spending and massive new debt, and more people losing jobs and/or coverage," which the RJC claims will lead to a complete "government takeover of health care."
