Accused Argentine police official resigns

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — An Argentine police official accused of obstructing an investigation into the 1994 bombing of an Argentine Jewish center has resigned.

The families of the 85 people killed in the bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center, along with political parties and non-gonvernmental groups, had collected thousands of signatures demanding the removal of Jorge “Fino” Palacios, who had been designated Buenos Aires’ new chief of police. Palacios resigned on Tuesday.

The Justice Ministry said he had resigned for “personal reasons."

Several Jewish and non-Jewish groups welcomed the announcement. But Buenos Aires’ mayor, Mauricio Macri, maintained his support for Palacios.
