WASHINGTON (JTA) — The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill requiring President Obama to report to Congress on U.S. engagement with Iran by January’s end.
The provision of the 2010 defense appropriations bill also says that sanctions must be placed on Tehran if it does not "accept the offer of the United States to engage in diplomatic talks" and if it fails to suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities related to its nuclear ambitions, according to AFP.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates also must submit an annual report to Congress "on the current and future military strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran," according to the legislation.
The bill now moves on to the Senate. Both houses are considering expanded Iran sanctions legislation.
