I lost professional interest in covering the Jewish back and forth over the Islamic center near Ground Zero for exactly the reasons Politico’s Ben Smith mentions here, explaining why the story has pretty much disappeared:
It became increasingly clear both that the project’s backers don’t have the wherewithal to build it and that the government has little right to stop it.
The rest, truly, was commentary, and not particularly enlightening commentary at that.
News is about what happens next in the real world, not in the fevered imaginings of conspiracy theorists.
