The first Israeli woman to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals failed to make the semifinals.
Shahar Pe’er, the No. 18 seed, was defeated by sixth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze, 6-4, 6-1, on Wednesday in New York. Chakvetadze will be making her first appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal. She never had reached a major quarterfinal until this year, when she made that round before losing at the Australian Open and French Open.
From 4-4 in the first set, the Russian took control against Pe’er. Chakvetadze won the last six games against the world’s 19th-ranked player.
Another Israeli, Andy Ram, and his French partner, Nathalie Dechy, also lost in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles competition. They fell to Zi Yan and Mark Knowles, 6-4, 6-4.
