More than 42,000 Jews immigrated to Canada in the last 15 years, and between 60 percent and 65 percent of them settled in Montreal, it was revealed here at an “open house” meeting conducted by the Federation of Jewish Community Services. The meeting was part of the Federation’s current campaign for raising $1,075,000 to meet the needs of its 10 agencies.
The figures on Jewish immigration were given by the principal speaker at the “open house,” Robert D. Shaw, deputy commissioner-general of a Canadian national exposition scheduled to be held here in 1967. Pointing up the need for support of the Federation agencies, Mr. Shaw noted that the increase in Jewish population through immigration has also made the services of Federation agencies more necessary.
He said that the rise in the Jewish population here in the last 15 years has increased the Jewish child population in Montreal by 75 percent. In the same period, he said, the ratio of Jewish aged in this city has risen to 33 percent.
