A state luncheon in honor of Nahum Sokolow was given yesterday by Governor Alvan T. Fuller at the Copley Plaza Hotel. Forty-five persons, including state and city officials, were present.
Governor Fuller stated in his speech addressed to Mr. Sokolow:
“As Governor of this great and liberty loving Commonwealth, I am very glad to greet you and to give you a hearty welcome. Massachusetts has always stood and, please God, always will stand, for liberty, for freedom, for true democracy and for service to mankind.
“Our Commonwealth was founded on the ideals and principles of the ancient Jewish state. Our ancestors were brought up on the Old Testament. And so it is with especial pleasure that we welcome you here, Mr. Sokolow, as the representative of an old and noble people to whom we are greatly indebted. You, Mr. Sokolow, have throughout your life been of yeoman service to your people, both in the ranks and in the field of leadership. You were active at the very birth of the present Zionist movement. You were one of the trusted lieutenants of that glorious and immortal Jewish leader, Theodore Herzl. You, together with that other great luminary, Dr. Weizmann, were mainly instrumental in. securing the Balfour Declaration, which guaranteed a Jewish homeland in Palestine and which is recognized by Jews the world over as their new magna charta. At the World Peace Conference in Paris, you again were the spokesman for your people, and last April, when the emotions of the world were stirred by the opening of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem, and the leading powers of the world and the great universities sent representatives and greetings on that occasion, you were one of the leading figures. As president of the World Zionist Executive you are in reality the secretary of state of the Jewish people. I welcome you and congratulate you upon the fact that Zionism is no longer a dream but a reality.”
ZIONISTS APPOINT COMMITTEE TO CONFER WITH ORTHODOX RABBIS
A committee representing the Zionist Organization of America and the United Palestine Appeal was named to confer with the Union of Orthodox Rabbis with a view to arriving at an understanding of the differences that have arisen as a result of the sermon delivered by Dr. Stephen S. Wise on December 20th.
The Committee named in accordance with a resolution adopted by the meeting of the executive bodies of the Zionist Organization of America and the United Palestine Appeal at the Pennsylvania Hotel last Sunday when the decision was reached not to accept the resignation of Dr. Wise as Chairman of the Appeal, consists of Jacob Fishman, Managing Editor of the “Jewish Morning Journal”; Abraham Goldberg; Morris A. Zeldin, Director of the Greater New York Campaign of the United Palestine Appeal; Joseph Barondess; Bernard Semel, S. Dingol, Managing Editor of “The Day”, and Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, Chairman of the American Jewish Physicians Committee.
AGUDAH SENDS $50,000 TO ORGANIZATION’S PALESTINE FUND
The sum of $50,000 for the Keren Ha’yishub, the Palestine fund of the Agudath Israel, the Orthodox Jewish organization, was sent by the American Branch of the Agudath, it was announced at the headquarters of the organization yesterday.
It was declared that this sum was raised here during the first month of the organization’s activities.
The Zeire Agudath Israel, the Young People’s Branch, signed a contract with the land and building company of the Agudath Israel to buy land for a special colony in Palestine.
A drive for $100,000 has been launched to build the first Hebrew school in Worcester, Mass. The funds are to be raised by the 300 members of the Congregational of Sons of Abraham. The announcement of the drive was made by Louis I. Wolpert, who will head it.
Construction of a new temple to replace the present one of the Free Synagogue, Flushing, L. L., will be started immediately, it was announced by the president of the congregation, Harold R. Zeamans.
The new temple will be constructed at a cost estimated at $175,000, Mr. Zeamans stated.
The auditorium in the Temple proper will have a seating capacity for 850 persons and the assembly rooms in the basement will provide seats for 600.
Plans have been completed for construction of two synagogues in Baltimore, Md.
One of the structures will be for the Beth Tefiloth congregation and will be erected at a cost of approximately $175,000. It will have a seating capacity of 750.
Bids for the erection of a new building for the Shaari Zion congregation will be asked. It will have a seating capacity for 1,000 persons.
A rabbinical rebuke, to which the retort was a slap across the mouth, has resulted in a $25,000 damage suit, filed by Rabbi David S. Savitz of Congregation B’nai Israel Ansche Ungurn, Milwaukee, Wis., against Louis D. Fisher, president of Congregation Israel Ansche Roumania.
The annual banquet of the Joung Judaea will take place tonight at the Hotel Roosevelt.
