Alan King, an heir to the Borscht Belt tradition who was known for his one-liners, died Sunday of lung cancer at age 76. King was known for his appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in the 1950s and 1960s, and for his guest-host appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He also appeared on film and stage, produced Broadway plays and wrote five books.
