Yosef Almogi, chairman of the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency Executives, has been invited to visit Rumania. The invitation, extended by Rumanian Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen on behalf of that country’s organized Jewish community, almost certainly had the prior approval of the Rumanian authorities and is therefore regarded here as of great importance and significance.
High Israeli government officials have visited Rumania in the past. Almogi is the first Israeli holding a strictly Zionist office–the top position in the World Zionist movement–to receive an invitation from that country. The invitation stated that the Jewish community of Rumania was honored to invite Almogi to Bucharest and also to visit smaller Jewish communities in other parts of the country. The invitation was discussed at a WZO Executive meeting today and Almogi is expected to accept. He would go to Rumania in February.
According to unconfirmed reports, the WZO chief would meet with a number of high officials of the Rumanian government to discuss, among other things, Jewish education in Rumania and Jewish emigration to Israel.
