An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian gunman were killed during a clash Wednesday in a village near the West Bank city of Tulkarm. Soldiers had been carrying out searches for suspected terrorists when they encountered three Palestinian gunmen. The soldier killed in the ensuing firefight was identified as Staff Sgt. Assaf Fuchs, 21, of Kibbutz Gvat.
