Arab diplomats here are using pressure to have President Nasser of the United Arab Republic invited to Washington as an official guest of the United States Government during his visit to the United Nations as head of his country’s delegation to the UN Assembly, it was revealed here today.
Indicating to Washington officials that Nasser was expecting such an invitation, the Arab diplomats were trying to create an impression that Nasser’s visit to Washington would improve Arab relations with the United States. Some officials in the State Department favor the extending of such an invitation, while others believe that such a gesture would provoke strong protests in this country among Jews.
(In New York, Former President Harry S. Truman yesterday denounced Nasser along with heads of Communist states planning to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking before a group of foreign-language newspaper editors, Mr. Truman declared: “I don’t think any more of Nasser than I do of Khrushchev, and they can both go to the bottom of the Atlantic as far as I’m concerned.”)
