A knowledge of Yiddish is a requirement for persons wishing to hold office in the police department in districts where the Jewish population is in the majority.

The Ispolkom, the executive committee of the Berditcheff district, issued an order that all policemen and chiefs of that district must know Yiddish. Otherwise they will be dismissed. The Jews in that district number sixty percent of the total population.
