Speaking in defense of his four bills for restrictions on aliens, Rep. Joe Starnes, (Dem., Alabama), demanded before the House Immigration Committee today a 90 per cent cut in immigration and removal of the Labor Department’s discretionary powers in deportation.
The Starnes bills call for a 90 per cent slash in immigration, registration of all aliens and deportation of all aliens on relief.
Samuel Dickstein (Dem., N.Y.), chairman of the committee, pointed out that cutting immigration 90 per cent would prevent the re-uniting of separated families. Mr. Starnes retorted: “They could be re-united by going back to their families.”
Mr. Starnes said there were too many aliens on relief and that this was a “hardship on American citizens.” He was supported by H.L. Chaillaux, an official of the American Legion, who held that alien labor provided unfair competition to Americans.
The hearings will continue tomorrow.
